6 Ways to Make Your Next Job Come To You
6 Ways to Make Your Next Job Come To You6 Ways to Make Your Next Job Come To You When it comes to looking for a new job, most people are reactive - they spot a job posting and apply, hoping theyll stand out amongst a long list of candidates who also spotted the same posting. But what if you could be proactive in your job search? In other words, what if you could steer your job-search efforts in such a way that you could sit back and let opportunities come to you? It sounds idealistically impossible. But its not. Reactively responding to job postings may provide immediate gratification, says Hannah Morgan , a job search and social media strategist and founder of Career Sherpa . But, the odds of getting a response are slim and the odds of landing a job are even slimmer. Plus, by doing all the searching yourself, youll miss out. There are more opportunities than seen posted on job sites, Morgan says. Shifting the focus to a proactive job search feels empowering. You re in control, and creating the potential for opportunities to find you. Ready to do it? Heres how. Employee referrals are one of the most powerful tools in your job-hunting arsenal. And who better to toss you a recommendation than the people who know and love you best in the world? So, send an email letting your friends know youre looking for a new job, suggests Heather Huhman , Generation Y career expert and founder of Come Recommended . Explain to them what you are looking for and include a copy of your resume. If anything opens up at their company, theyll have you top of mind. 2. Turn Facebook into a portfolio. This social media site isnt just about snooping into your high-school friends lives. You can also use status updates to help your personal network understand your areas of expertise and career focus, points out Morgan. Share information related to your career goals , such as trending industry nachrichtensendung or updates from companies you are interested in working for. A long-lost friend might just come to you with a lead. A lot of us like to leave work, well, at work . But Huhman says we shouldnt be afraid to talk shop when were out and about because you never know whos listening, and what insider information they may know. Whether youre attending a dinner party or just sitting next to someone on a plane, discussing with them what you do for a living is a great idea, she says. Think of it this way If the person doesnt know about an opportunity for you, at least youll have grown your professional network. 4. Show off to your boss- or a future employer. No ones talking about brown-nosing. But when your employer asks for volunteers to tackle a presentation, dont slink down in your seat- raise your hand and knock it out of the park. Taking any opportunity thats given to you is an easy way to get onto your managers radar, says Morgan. Seizing these moments can also get you noticed by people outside ofyour company, too. Morgan recommends you look for chances to deliver a presentation, serve as a panelist, or be a guest on a podcast. Youll find them through professional associations, industry conferences or clubs, she says. While LinkedIn may not be as fun to use as, say, Instagram, this social site can pay big dividends in a proactive job search- if you make yourself marketable, that is. How do you do that? Huhman recommends uploading your current and best work samples . As she explains, many employers want examples that show how good you are at your job. By posting past work projects on LinkedIn, anyone who finds your profile can get a more in-depth look at the schrift of employee youd be. Morgan says another smart LinkedIn move is to create a presume- a presentation resume. Then, share a link as a status update on LinkedIn and other social outlets, she suggests. People can forget a face, or even what someone says. But if they spot your name as the author of an awesome newsletter or a shareable post on LinkedIn, you may just get name-recognition- and eventually, a job offer. So, contribute to newsletters, write a guest post for an industry blog, or publish your own on LinkedIn, Morgan suggests. Select a topic you have expertise in, such as a list of top resources or tips to do your job. You could analyze trends related to your work or write a case study.

How to Avoid Becoming a Workaholic
How to Avoid Becoming a WorkaholicHow to Avoid Becoming a WorkaholicWhen it comes to your career, you are committed and passionate. Your job is fulfilling. In many ways it has become a part of your identity. But is there a downside to your dedication? Are you a workaholic?Hard work, we are told, pays off. But in a culture that tends to overvalue workaholism (often passing it off as routine devotion), those long hours could throw off your delicate work-life balance. The workaholic is becoming less anonymousAs any bona fide workaholic can attest, sometimes your job (and the need to do it anywhere, anytime) just sneaks up on you. While you once only imbibed when appropriate - like during normal business hours - now you find yourself staying late to reply to emails when no one is around.Soon after, you begin bringing work home so you can catch up after hours. And to top it all off, your fruchtwein sacred free time - your weekends - are becoming less about you and more about work. Your e not alone More than three-quarters (77 percent) of advertising and marketing executives surveyed by The Creative Group said they send work-related emails at least one weekend per month, with 15 percent reporting they do it every weekend. And while you never imagined it would happen, youre now skipping vacations, too.Its time for an intervention. The first step is admitting youre a workaholicConsistently putting in long hours and making a habit of working on the weekend is not good for the creative soul. In fact, too much work can be unhealthy, unproductive and unrewarding. Everyone needs to strike the right work-life balance to be happy - for ones sanity and to tend to other key life functions (like sleeping, eating right, exercising and attending to the important people in your life). Not to mention burnout, which can seriously hinder creativity.3 tips to avoid becoming a workaholicIf achieving a healthier work-life balance is something youre after, consider these three tips for k eeping your workweek under control.1. Time management. Time is one of your fruchtwein important resources. Were paid for it (and often by it), so it makes sense to spend it wisely. This might mean declining non-essential meetings or dedicating time on your calendar to accomplishing one task (like writing a blog post). Also keep opportunity costs in mind if youre spending hours on a less urgent project, youre missing out on attending to those that could be more impactful. And while a quick procrastination break every now and then never hurt anyone, its important to set end goals to keep your productivity in check.2. Delegation. Learning how to delegate is the yin to time managements yang. In other words, you will have more time if you know how to delegate tasks as appropriate. To start, know what requires your expertise and what doesnt. Perhaps a project manager is the better person to run a meeting or keep a project rolling. Understand your teams strengths and make good use of them. Finally, be honest about what you can take on. If you feel overwhelmed, you likely wont be able to produce your best work. Be willing to say no sometimes and ask for help.3. Clear boundaries. geschftlicher umgang fluctuates, and there will no doubt be times when you have to stay late, work a Saturday or return an email in the wee hours. But its unwise to make this a habit. Remember why youre working in the first place to support yourself or your family, and to feel fulfilled, empowered or professionally satisfied. If you dont want to find yourself in the live to work group, create clear boundaries. This may mean leaving by 600 each evening, no matter what, or blocking time to work out during your lunch break. It may also mean not checking work email on your personal phone or at all on the weekends.Make working work for youWorking is not all bad its what most of us have to do to eat, live and stay intellectually challenged. It is vital. And even if you were to eliminate the notion o f financial dependence, work in its own right can be enjoyable and provide a sense of pride. When you love what you do, you want to do it, and you want to do it well. That is why its so important to find a balance.Looking for more on this topic? Read our post on time management tips now

Are You Too Comfortable in Your Job - The Muse
Are You Too Comfortable in Your Job - The Muse Are You Too Comfortable in Your Job Being comfortable is usually a good thing. At the beginning of a new job, thatâs what you aspire to. You canât wait to push past the awkwardness of getting to know new colleagues, the stress of not knowing what youâre doing, and the pressure to prove yourself. You just want to be able to relax. But thereâs a point at which being comfortable in your job can be a bad thing and work against you in your career growth. Honestly, you should always strive to feel a little uncomfortable in your job- because that means youâre learning, growing, pushing yourself, and working toward something bigger. Here are a few signs you may be resting on your laurels at work- and what it can mean for your future. 1. âThatâs Not Possibleâ Becomes Your Immediate Response Remember when you were new to the job and eager to impress? You didnât want to let anyone down, so no matter what was asked of you, you found a way to make it happen. But when you get too used to the ways things are, that way of thinking can change. Instead, you start sticking to the status quo instead of challenging it. If someone asks you to do something that seems difficult or outside of your normal responsibilities, your response is no longer, âIâll find a way to make that happen,â but rather, âSorry, thatâs not possible.â The Danger Zone When you donât put visible effort into your actions or responses, youâll eventually get caught. Youâll tell someone, âThatâs not possible,â but inevitably, someone else will figure out how to get it done- and then youâll look lazy. And if you keep it up, youâll develop a reputation for being unreliable. 2. You Stop Pushing Back When youâre hungry for success, youâre more eager to make your voice heard. That means when someone suggests an idea, youâre much more likely to share your opinion about whether it will work or not and what you think would make it work even better. You want to push your team- and yourself- to be the best you can possibly be. But once youâre comfortable in your position, that becomes less of a priority. Instead of pushing back against ideas you donât agree with or think will work, you start agreeing with whatever is suggested first. The less resistance you offer, the quicker the meeting can be adjourned and you can go home. The Danger Zone If you arenât pushing back, thereâs a good chance youâre becoming OK with mediocre work, and thatâs bad news for your career. You should be excited to help your boss and team develop the best ideas possible- ideas that are going to work and deliver results. At some point, especially if you started as a vocal go-getter, your boss is going to notice your lack of enthusiasm- and could assume that youâre not interested moving up (or being part of the team at all). 3. You Arenât Interested in New Opportunities When you know what youâre doing, youâre good at it, and you donât have any intention of leaving that job any time soon, you start letting the idea of new opportunities pass you by. You quit networking, stop updating your resume, and start neglecting your LinkedIn profile- and you certainly donât set virtual foot on any job search boards. It just doesnât seem worth your time when youâre perfectly content in your current job. The Danger Zone You may not think you want a new job right now, but by shutting yourself off from your contacts, you could easily miss out on new opportunities- for a new job, a way to collaborate with another company or department, or an introduction to another contact who could boost your career. Plus, by staying job-search ready with an up-to-date resume, online presence, and network of contacts, if something unexpected were to happen to your current job, youâd be in a good place to quickly line up something new. 4. Youâre OK With the Bare Minimum You show up to the office at 9 AM, take your lunch break from 12 PM to 1 PM (OK, maybe a little longer on Fridays), and youâre out the door at 5 PM sharp. Your daily routine is like clockwork. You have your job and day-to-day routine down to a science, so why stick around any longer than youâre expected to? The Danger Zone Itâs not about working long hours or refusing to take a lunch break; we all want a healthy work-life balance. But such a firm routine hints that you may not be feeling any pressure in your job, let alone excitement about projects that push you past watching the clock- which could mean youâre not being challenged. Instead, you should be constantly looking for ways to take on new responsibilities or projects that will help you develop new skills. By doing that, youâll put yourself in a position in which others (namely, your boss) can clearly see your work ethic and potential for advancement. Photo of woman at desk courtesy of Shutterstock.

6 Tips That Will Get You Hired Before the End of Summer
6 Tips That Will Get You Hired Before the End of Summer 6 Tips That Will Get You Hired Before the End of Summer Are you a fresh graduate trying to find your first real job after college? Do you feel slightly uneasy when you look at all that empty space on your college student resume? Have you already applied for several jobs but youâve yet to score a single interview? What if I told you that your lack of experience isnât the main problem? After all, everyone has skills and knowledge to show off. The biggest challenge is to discover and transcribe these skills and experiences into words in the right way. Still, writing a resume is no rocket science- thereâs no reason to feel intimidated. If you follow the simple guidelines below, youâll easily get hired before the end of this summer. 1. Figure out why youâd excel in this position Many fresh graduates are understandably unsure whether they have what it takes for a job. Yet, adopting a self-confident mindset from the start is absolutely crucial if you want to succeed. Before you start writing your resume, sit down and try to think of 4-5 reasons why youâd excel in the job youâre applying for. Write them down in detail, it will help you articulate who you are as a candidate. Youâll have a much easier time writing your resume once youâve asked yourself all the important questions. Moreover, it will also help you succeed at the interview. 2. Do your research and tailor your resume to every job Thereâs no such thing as a one-size-fits-all resume. If you want to be seen as a great fit for a position, your resume needs to meet the positionâs specific requirements. Create several different resumes. Always begin by carefully rereading the job offer and identify the most important skills needed for the job, which you can easily do using Jobscan. Make sure your resume corresponds to these requirements. Even more importantly, research every company youâre approaching. At the end of the day, you should know everything about their core business, company culture, and even their hiring managers (LinkedIn is great for that). Once you have a clear picture, you can easily adjust your resume to fit their expectations. 3. Highlight your transferrable skills Lack of experience doesnât have to be an unsurmountable obstacle either. Perhaps you didnât have enough foresight to do an internship. Still, youâve just spent several years in college learning things. All you have to do is to articulate it now. Many of the skills youâve acquired in college may not be obviously related to the position youâre applying for. In your studies, youâve probably also demonstrated competence in skills such as time management, oral and written communication, fundraising, or public speaking. Donât forget to include these transferrable skills in your resume together with specific examples of how you used these skills in college or during internships. 4. Choose the right resume format If youâve already tried to write a chronological resume, youâve probably realised how painfully empty it looks. Still, you can remove much of the anxiety by choosing the right resume format. After all, even if you donât have much experience yet, it doesnât mean you have no skills. Write a functional resume instead. This resume format highlights your skills much more effectively than a classic chronological resume. For this reason, it works especially well for recent graduates such as yourself. Finally, you might also want to consider using one of the online resume builders such as Kickresume, they will help you structure your resume if you donât know where to start. 5. Keep it relevant A resume is not a confessional, it shouldnât be about yourself. Instead, it needs to be about an employer youâre approaching. Resume has to show the employer that someone with your skills and experience is best-suited to solve the problems that come with a given position. This can be a bit tricky. After all, even seemingly unrelated experiences can help give a better idea of what kind of a candidate you are. Still, thereâs no way that something like taking a French class in high school (or high school as such) is still relevant. Scrap it. 6. Make your resume fit one page Your resume has to fit on one page. Period. Especially as an entry-level candidate, thereâs simply no chance you could make use of two pages effectively. Perhaps youâve already heard that recruiters usually spent about 6 seconds on each resume. You only have about 6 seconds to make a lasting impression. The shortness of this time is the reason why your resume should also be short. Remember, no oneâs going to read the second page. Bringing the Power of Movies to the Conference Room (With and Without Video)
Bringing the Power of Movies to the Conference Room (With and Without Video) Bringing the Power of Movies to the Conference Room (With and Without Video) When it comes to attracting, training, motivating, and unifying employees, more and more companies are using a powerful new tool. Its not a new technology. Rather, its a technique based on something we already know and love: movies. Weve all experienced how powerful movies are. In seconds, they can make even the most distant planet feel real. Their heroes teach and inspire us. The moments they create move us, shape our opinions, and rally us together. Thats why companies are increasingly using videos and movie-style storytelling to harness that speed and power for internal communication and presentations. Here are just a few examples of how theyre doing it: Recruitment When youre courting new employees, a movie that positions your company as a strategic leader headed for bigger things can be especially attractive. It also doesnt hurt to show how fun your employees are. Even more persuasive is presenting your people as colleagues your prospects can look up to. A short movie can do that for you and bring out the true personality of your company to new prospects. Rallying New and Current Employees Around the Mission When starting a new job, most employees are handed a stack of decks that leave them completely lost. What if, instead, you show new hires a dynamic five-minute movie telling the companys story, mission, and strategy? New hires will be excited, retain more, and start contributing right away. If you include stories of real customers and get the companys leaders on camera, your film can also breathe life into the companys mission in ways no written statement can achieve. Presentations Even without video, the way movies tell stories is actually a surprisingly good fit for corporate execs. Movie storytelling is built on the same principles they are currently seeking in presentations: being simple, quick, visual, and powerful. Using the Screenwriter Approach to Simplify Screenwriters are able to write so quickly because they start with three key scenes, then build the rest of the movie around them. You can do the same thing: Decide which three things in your presentation are most important to your stakeholders and emphasize those. Youll find this method makes it easier to write your presentation, and because youre emphasizing just three keys, youll be able to choose what people remember. Think about what would happen if you tried to evenly emphasize 10 different points! Using the Directors Approach to Make It Quick, Real, and Relevant Every slide, even a data point or chart, is about something. That means it can be described as a scene, with characters, a setting, and action. Describing your slides in these terms will make it much easier for your stakeholders to grasp the main ideas because you will give them something to relate to. One good way to find the scene in your slide or chart is with two words you use all the time: For example. Look at your data point, and then say, For example This will immediately put characters, a setting, and action in your head. Then, if you make it visual, youll make your point even more quickly and put everyone on the same page because they will all see it the same way. When You Really Need to Hit It Out of the Park, Make It Powerful For the everyday presentation, being simple and relevant is often enough. However, when the stakes are especially high, you can take it up a level and truly move your stakeholders with movies that start with an emotional arc. The emotional arc holds us in our seats, makes us love and remember movies, and floods our brains with two amazing hormones: cortisol, which makes us focus, and oxytocin, which opens us up to new ideas and inspires us. You can spark these two hormones with an arc Ive seen work time and time again in corporations: establish urgency, build desire for your idea, and finish by evoking confidence. That arc will take your stakeholders through an emotional journey of we need to do this, we want to do this, and we can do this â" all of which will build support for your insights and ideas. Those are just a few of the movie-style strategies companies are using today. There are many, many more. None of these strategies are all that difficult to implement, and they can all make a huge difference in your ability to connect, communicate, and inspire. Ted Frank is the author of Get to the Heart. As a story strategist at Backstories Studio, he uses movie-style storytelling to help people make their presentations quicker, more visual, and more emotionally effective.

How to Avoid Being a Pushover at Work
How to Avoid Being a Pushover at Work How to Avoid Being a Pushover at Work Some workers are naturally more assertive than others. But thereâs a pretty wide gap between being assertive and being a total pushover, and if you land on the wrong end of that spectrum, you might end up not only setting back your career, but making yourself unhappy on the job . Of course, itâs easy to see how someone whoâs naturally timid might quickly reach pushover status. Maybe you have a demanding, aggressive boss youâre eager to please. Or maybe you simply find it easier to agree to things than to argue against them. The problem, of course, is that if you donât change your ways, youâll not only risk getting completely taken advantage of, but quite possibly burn out when others realize they can unload on you regularly. To avoid that fate, here are a few important steps to take. At the core of not being a pushover is mastering the art of respectfully but firmly saying no. Now one misconception is that you need to qualify each ânoâ you utter with a drawn-out, elaborate excuse. You donât. Rather, you just need to be matter-of-fact and secure in your responses . Hereâs an example. Imagine your manager asks you to work on a Saturday to help your team meet a deadline. Your first inclination might be to either say yes, or attempt to get out of that request by saying no but offering an intricate story to go along with it. But rather than start telling some tale of your long-lost cousin coming to town while your cat simultaneously needs his claws professionally filed down by the one groomer in town authorized to deal with that breed, save yourself the trouble and just say something like, âNo, coming in this Saturday wonât work for me since I have previous obligations that day.â Keeping your answers short and sweet often sends a louder message than feeling the need to justify them. And chances are, once your boss is caught off-guard by a ânoâ or two, he or she will get the point and stop attempting to take advantage. If you have pushover tendencies, the words ânoâ and âIâm sorryâ tend to go hand in hand. So eliminate the latter from your on-the-job vocabulary. The next time someone asks for something unreasonable, donât apologize for not being able to accommodate. Rather, couple your no with a short but effective explanation, and leave it at that. For example, if a colleague asks you to jump in on a project during a week when youâre utterly swamped, you may be inclined to say, âIâm sorry, but Iâm really busy this week and donât think I have the time.â But when you say it that way, the person asking might continue to push. On the other hand, if you eliminate the apology and firmly say, âIâm too busy this week and donât have the time,â he or she is more likely to back off. The problem with saying no at work too often is that you could come off as uncooperative or inflexible, neither of which will work wonders for your career. Therefore, while you donât want to be a pushover, you also donât want to inadvertently go to the opposite extreme, either. A good compromise? Get creative and aim to come up with solutions that help solve company problems without you having to suffer. For instance, say your boss asks you to work late one night on a last-minute presentation , and itâs not something you want to do (nor is it really your responsibility per se). Rather than say yes or no, try saying, âIâd like to help but canât stay past 6:00. Iâll drop what Iâm doing now to compile some slides and will pick back up first thing in the morning.â This way, rather than saying yes and ruining your night, or saying no and angering your boss, youâre offering up an alternate solution that just might work. Even if it doesnât, youâre still being respectful and helpful enough that your boss may not hold it against you. Being known as a pushover at work could hurt your career in more ways than one, whether itâs getting stuck with the lousiest projects or losing out on a chance to get promoted. Therefore, if youâre starting to be known as the resident pushover, nip that sentiment in the bud before it really sets you back. Itâs a far better bet than letting others walk all over you and making yourself miserable in the process.

Lessons These are the only 3 most important questions for your career
Lessons These are the only 3 most important questions for your career Lessons These are the only 3 most important questions for your career When I was a young boy, my dad made a major commitment to my twin sister and me when he promised to be there for our first day of school. He worked in Sao Paulo, Brazil and only came back to Milan, Italy twice a year. That day when the final bell rang, my dad was waiting for us at the school gates. I was overjoyed to see him and jumped into his arms. On the way home, we bombarded him with our stories: what weâd done at school, the names of our new classmates, the teacher, the blackboard with all the colored chalk, the map of Italy on the wall. After dinner, he invited me to sit down in front of him. He was quiet for a few beats, and then he looked me in the eye and said:âPaolo, starting tomorrow, donât talk about what you did, but ask yourself what have you learned, if you helped other people and if you love what youâre doing because nothing else matters.âOf all the millions of words Iâve heard and read over the years, these questions from my dad influenced my life more than any others. These three questions have been my own compass for the past 48 years and offer important lessons about happiness and success.Have I learned something new?About 200 years ago, life expectancy was approximately 40s. It has increased two years per decade since then. By 2060, life expectancy will be close to 100.What does that mean for us?We need to move from a life divided into three phases (get a diploma, work, retire) to become an unstoppable learning machine. How?We must be curious. Learning is not something that happens uniquely at university, at school, or at a professional course in your company. What we do in our spare time can provide lessons to energize our working life.Have you coached an amateur sports team? You learned how to manage a team. Have you tutored students? You learned how to motivate people. Were you a babysitter? You fostered a sense of responsibility. We must learn from others.Every person we meet in our lives knows more about something than we do. That means we can learn from everyone. We can also learn from the best teachers in the world: children.I got a wonderful lesson from my daughter, Sadika, when she was 4-years-old. I was working, and she came to give me a kiss.âNot now; I am busy working,â I told her.She looked at me in disbelief and told me: âDad, never ever again refuse a kiss from someone who loves you!âWe must also redefine failure.A key element of success is failure - provided that we learn from it. We all learn by making these mistakes. As Nelson Mandela said: â I never lose. I either win or learn.âAm I helping others?Who are the most successful people: the takers, the matchers, or the givers? The takers want something from you, the matchers wait for reciprocity, and the givers wants to help you and give something to you, such as their time, energy, contacts, knowledge, feedback, or just an advice. The givers are the most successful - as long they understand the difference between pleasing others and helping others.Helping others can get you hired. Networking is not about calling someone when you need but about investing time, energy, respect in relationships.Who gets most of the jobs? The candidates who, in addition to being qualified, have built a positive relationship based on trust, integrity, and reputation.Do I love what I do?I learned an important lesson in Antigua, Guatemala, when I tried to buy an unfinished watercolor from a street artist named Gerardo. Since the painting was unfinished, I asked for a discount, but he insisted on charging me twice the normal price.I was surprised and somewhat upset until he explained: âBecause you take away from me the joy to do something I really love.âMark Twain said: âThe two most important days of your life are the day in which you are born and the day in which you find out why.âItâs important to ask yourself not only what you love but what gives you purpose.I discovered my purpose in 1996, in a re mote village in West Cameroon when I was working at the World Bank. The driver, George, took me to visit an agricultural project and stopped in front of a well. He told me that, before it was built, his mother had to walk six kilometers to go to the river to collect water with a small bucket.George took me to his village, and I met his mother. She embraced me. This was the second most important day of my life. The most important lessonMy dad has given me the gift of three powerful questions that have been in my heart since then and have guided me toward success. But the most important thing I learned about life came from my daughter. Never ever refuse a kiss from somebody who loves you.Paolo Gallo is the Chief Human Resources Officer at the World Economic Forum, a career coach, and the author of La Bussola del Successo.Gallo delivered a version of this article at TEDx Lausanne on April 21, 2017.

A guinea pig in uniform is the best New Zealand policeman
A guinea pig in uniform is the best New Zealand policeman A guinea pig in uniform is the best New Zealand policeman Weâve heard of police dogs, but police guinea pigs are a new one.Yet this weekend, New Zealand Police introduced the world to Constable Elliot, a fluffy guinea pig in a police uniform. The new mascot isnât just decorative, however. He also has a job to do: giving out safety tips. The organization posted photos of the fuzzy critter on its Facebook page to show him hard at work, joining the ranks of working animals we admire including Pandora the Cat.Constable Elliot is unlikely to strike fear into anyone, but he looks dashing in his little uniform and cap and he wields authority surprisingly well despite - or perhaps because of - his fluffiness. The caption for one of his public photos starts off with an adorable account of how âa piggieâs top speedâ can reportedly be âaround 9km/hr,â and later launches into this: ââ¦I am not too fast and thatâs the way I like it â" slow is safe! Keep this in mind when you are driving near any schools tomorrow. Remember people, the kids are going to be out and about walking and biking, and crossing roads. Ethics in Engineering
Ethics in Engineering Ethics in Engineering Ethics in Engineering One of the most powerful gifts of engineering is how it improves lives. But, in the wrong hands, it can be the opposite. William Marcy, executive director of the Murdough Center for Engineering Professionalism/National Institute for Engineering Ethics, teaches a course on engineering ethics to roughly 600 students per year at Texas Tech University. He advises them to look at all the angles and encourages professional engineers to do the same. Its about looking past what people would know about and understanding what your obligation is, he says. One example he uses involves a fastening attachment. Lets say you project into the future what the consequences might be, he says. If an outside inspector said a certain fastening attachment isnt at the level of quality required, whos responsible for fixing this? Should the one who did it in 2001 be even though the standards might have been different? If you put something in that no longer is up to code, is your company obligated to say something if that outside inspector was never involved and no one brought it up? Making an ethical decision is thinking about the lifecycle of a project or product or design, not just assuming everything is fine. What may be OK in 2001 may not be fine in 2013 because technology, policies, and design methods can all change. An example he had students look at is the Tesla electric car. Its very interesting because you would think about the responsibility of the safety of the carbut what about the batteries? he says. Some day that car will go to a landfill and how is that battery for the environment? If you think of the life cycle, does the company have a responsibility to properly dispose of the carshould that be part of the offering to a customer when they buy? After all, it may not be a factor for more than a decade. Marcy says offering up these examples and teaching the course gets students to visualize their careers ahead. There will be moments for advancement that could pull at their conscience. Decisions can be made that could literally decide lives. It gets them thinking about who they want to be, he says. The working world can put pressure on anyone. It also allows them to consider what assumptions theyve always made. We talked about the technological concept of offering Wi-Fi for free through the government, he says. So many thought it was a great idea. Then we talked about the fact our taxes pay for the government. Is it fair someone else will have to, in the end, pay for the Wi-Fi? Is it fair to ever call something offered from the government free? Suddenly, [fewer] people thought it was a great idea or that it should be presented as free. Marcy finds many students are most engaged by ethical decisions that arent easy choices but require making decisions that can be seen in many ways. Ethics are opportunities for a healthy debate, he says. Its a chance to really see different ways to look at a problem. You do that when you create something but also when you look at the moral implications of that creation. Being ethical isnt always about cut and dry answers but getting yourself to actually consider the possibilities. By doing that, youre already ahead of many people. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. Being ethical isn't always about cut and dry answers but getting yourself to actually consider the possibilities.William Marcy, Texas Tech University
